Artist's Description

USS Hornet (CV-8) and the Doolittle Raiders headed west towards Tokyo. The aircraft are stacked in their 'en route' positions as shown in period newsreels. For launch, the aircraft were all pushed back tightly until the first ship was just behind the island. The launch run was 467 feet. With a 20 kt headwind, all aircraft safely departed the ship towards their rendezvous with Air Force and Navy History.
