Description
"Lucky, Lucky, Lucky" -George Welch, upon touchdown of the XF-86 nose wheel.
After landing gear retraction was made at approximately 10,000 feet altitude at an airspeed of 160 knots and 7700 RPM, the P-82 chase plane observed that both main gear failed to completely retract. Several cycles of the landing gear control were made in an attempt to fully raise the main gear, but without success. It was then noted that the nose gear failed to extend beyond approximately 20 for airspeeds ranging from about 130 to 175 knots, although hydraulic accumulator pressures were normal. The emergency down system was also employed without success. The nose gear failed to extend when the landing gear control was moved to the down position and the emergency pump employed. Accordingly, it was judged advisable to attempt a landing with the main gear extended and try to hold the nose off the ground as long as possible. The airplane was touched down in a nose high attitude at about 117 knots and ground observers noted the gradual extension of the nose gear as the airspeed decreased. At 78 knots the nose gear indicated full down and locked and the airplane settled to a normal attitude.
