Cactus Christmas
Twas the day before Christmas, on Guadalcanal
All of Tojo's land forces had thrown in the towel.
Yamamoto retreated far back up the slot
and the nightly bombardment was no longer hot.
And snug in our billet, we played Acey Ducey,
and yakked about rumors considered quite juicy.
Then a Marine R4D shot straight overhead
and I was sure (then and there!) that THAT pilot was dead.
His energy gone, his sink rate too high,
I was surely to watch this poor Gooney Bird fry.
At the very last instant, he pulled out of the fire,
crunched onto the runway, a complaint from each tire.
They were already unloading, as we piled in the Jeep,
and all six of us wanted a piece of this creep.
"On Gunny! On Sarge! On LT and Murray! On Mel-
C'mon Jenkins! Now move your butt, hurry!"
As we rounded her wing, I had lots on my plate,
every guy on the vehicle shifted his weight.
