Artist's Description

This piece depicts Spitfire VZ-H (Serial No.AD291), the aircraft regularly flown by Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee.

Magee was killed while flying this aircraft on 11 December, 1941, in a collision with another aircraft. His legacy, and that of his poem, "High Flight" is reflected in this work.

The text from the original version of Magee's famous poem is faithfully recreated here from a copy now residing in the Library of Congress.
